Chimaeros
Was wondering if anyone has experience with Fantasy Grounds and/or Roll20 for running games with remote players. Fantasy Grounds recently came to Steam...tempting...but roll20 is free...even more tempting. I have one group I play with that exclusively does rpgs and another more board game oriented. I thought it would be cool to do something that would allow players who can't physically get to a session to still play. Messed a little with the FG demo and it seems good, if a bit cumbersome in some of its mechanics. Haven't tried Roll20 yet, though watched their promo video. Lifedragn
I've toyed with both, but never ran a full game in either. Fantasy Grounds is very pretty, and I like their animated dice. I haven't checked in to see if new features have been added lately. Roll20 is more lightweight for now, and I find the free accounts to be a little limiting if you need to upload a lot of your own artwork. However, they are still new and the feature sets are still growing as they have time to build it out. I have run games in MapTool from rptools.net to great effect. I find it is overall less clunky than the Roll20 web interface, very deep in features if you spend your time learning how to use it, but not quite as pretty as FantasyGrounds. It is free, but requires an installed program.
Gayel Nord
I am a user of roll 20. Most free. If you pass the audio (It is better if you use an alternative like google handout or mumble), it is great. I using for pathfinder society adventure. I don't use a lot of image. The map is easy to use. Like the d20 roll. You can do macro to speed the process. (the attack roll for exemple.) You will need a lot of macro for the malus and bonus. But it don't take a lot of place.
Ixiolander
I use roll20 extensively. It's simple and very easy to use with a lot of great features. As Gayel said, we usually use a secondary for the audio/chatting.
SDShannonS
I've been running games via MapTool for years now. It's free, Java-based, very powerful, and as simple or complex as you choose to make it. I highly recommend it.
