Stagnant - Players returning?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious...I know the CotP isle situation is due to Bendarek having commitments that take obvious priority. Are we going to see the return of any of you who have been gone or taking breaks? What are you needing from SotA that you aren't getting? Its awful quite around here and the boat needs some air to the main sail. :)

I just feel like the game isn't very immersive. I may try to give it another shot but the combat feels off. the magic system feels off. I never like it when from a mechanic standpoint magic and melee function exactly the same. They are different and should require different mechanics IMO.

Well if you decide to come back let us know Trusin it will be great get some play time in together. I haven't played Conan in a while since returning to Shroud. It is great to see you here. There is a free trial going on starting today if you haven't purchased the game already. If anything I can set you up in one of the guild homes or inns and let you venture around while having a place to store stuff besides the bank. I am Spryone DeRonin in game if you might need a friend in Novia.

I haven't tried it in a while and will come back for a run around to see if it can hook me back in. The combat was the main issue I had, with the collisions and hitboxes not seeming to be very accurate along with the magic system being a little weird (unique). It is definately more fun with a couple of others running around, so if we can find a time to get even a small group together, that would be great. That said, I might pop in and see what I can do solo one of these days =D

Thank you also Jasc for thinking about Shroud again. I am sure it has changed since last you played it also. I am really starting to think of Shroud as a process just like the game Eve has been for a number of years now. The game has a solid player base and slowly it is getting better. We will have Guild embassies throughout Norath that guildies can use as a base. If you need a bit more privacy we have Inns at several towns you can use for 1000 gold a week. The rental system has been implimented. I must appoligize since the Inns I have placed are behind on being decorated but I have no plans of decorating rooms in the Inns. Thats all up to the renter for their room.

I will also come and see what they have changed, the combat changes was getting annoying. I have also been playing Dark and Light and 7 Days to Die so games all over the place as well.

Welcome back Drothar. I hope you are going to like what has changed since your time here. There have been a number of things that have been "polished" or tweeked somewhat in game. The main questlines are more fleshed out as well.

I have been poking around in Shroud again after a long break.  I am heavily invested financially in this game and have high hopes in it.  I definately see significant improvements in performance and visuals.  My biggest disappointment is, apart from community run events,  the world seems empty of people.  Played 6 hours yesterday and 8 hours on Sunday ran into 6 people on overland map but no one in any zone I was including major cities and towns.  The uncloning of zones is nice but I still don't feel a sense of purpose other to farm resources which has not been hard in my opinion.  I been spendng more time in PvP zones as that was something I loved in UO (that sense of being ganked while mining or fighting mobs made it exciting).  I amreally disappointed in the dungeons.  I thought they had a great format in UO.  The deeper you went into dungeons the harder it got and the better treasure you found.

I will continue to play and support this game, the big question is willI play it more then casuallly is yet to be seen.

The big thing that chased away players is the way they decided to do housing, I will admit they could have handled that system way better. The resource gathering gets harder when you decide you want to enchant or enhance then it becomes a how much time do I want to invest into getting silver and gold ore. The gaining of crafting experience is a big sore spot as well, if someone wants to be a GM Alchemist they get to spend hours and hours mining for ore or other things just to build up exp.

On the topic of the world feeling empty I personally don't think that feeling is going to change significantly at launch. It's just the way the game is setup. If they ever get Friends Only setup they way the initially advertised it I think you'll see even less people in multiplayer. I love the option to just play with friends co-op style and avoid a lot of the garbage.

I didn't love UO, I loved Ultima. Anything they can do to make the world more Ultima and less like every other MMO the better. It just seems to continually be a goal of the Devs to add more and more API and group finding tools, and things of that nature. When is the madness going to stop. These types of games are meant to be played and experienced in game not out of game. Do you want to find a good deal on a sword? Go explore towns and vendors and find that whole in the wall blacksmith. Don't go search a tool out of the game that lists everything on sale at every vendor in the game. It's so frustrating to me...sorry ranting....

Focus on story, in game systems (agriculture, crafting, quests) system improvements like Friendly minimalized UI, and system optimizations ( load times)

The team started with a vision and sold the vision of no hand holding and an old school style RPG. They constantly are doing things to make the game for "mass appeal". That gives great short term numbers but for the long term. Their core audience will go poof. Yes, I'm aggravated with Portalarium. I hope they pull they're heads out of their collective bums.

I'm not sure what issues people had about the way they did housing? I don't recall much argument surrounding housing with the exception of persistence being way to early and a few people not wanting PoTs. I'm perplexed by that statement.

The housing situation is a lot like UO, at the beginning they let people have to many houses on one account or to many accounts, and allowed them to take up quite a bit of prime npc town territory. Because of all the prime territory already being taken up alot of people I knew who had interest in the game have kinda just thrown it to the side, not many wanted to throw a ton of money at it just to get good property. I think if they do a purge like what happened on UO they will get more new players interested in the game.

See I get the thought but honestly it holds little weight with me. I've acquired multiple lots in Central Brittany and other main story line towns by doing nothing but checking the town criers. Heck there were 5 Row lots in Ardoris yesterday and there are a ton of NPC lots left. Spend about $50 and go to the oracle once a day a voila. There won't be a purge. I'd be in the front of the line outside Port with my pitchfork if they ever did that.

You make some good points.  I really felt that the Devs were taking a huge gamble at trying to do an Ultima / UO hybrid game.  Those two communities want two completely different experiences and trying to do it with 12 million bucks is even more challenging.  Although I started in UO, I did go back and play the Ultima series.  I don't find any of the storyline that compelling and the npc characters I have encountered don't leave much of a lasting impression on me.  The fail on the multiplayer side because there just isn't the community base outside of the diehards.  Over the 8 years I played UO, I have met lots of people who remain friends with me to this day.  So for me the game is missing the mark on that front as well.  In friends only, is there anything in the game currently that after you finished with a party of friends that you would be like "Hell yeah that was awesome!!"?

I've had a couple of the "hell yeah!" Experiences. Mostly centered around grouping with the guys. First troll fight, fire chicken fight, first time in the rise. I'm hoping with all of us together we can make something great out of what they've given us to work with until they add more.

On a truly positive note it's been awesome to log in and have more friends around. It has given me a much needed lift.

I am definitely having fun again, I just hope and pray they revisit or change the crafting guy, the crafting situation needs a ton of help atm. I think we should try doing some gathering events to help crafters stuck at certain points, sadly I think this would just evolve into everyone needing silver :(

I have a pretty good backstock of some crafting supplies. If we setup some sort of community chests at the pavilion I'd be happy to donate and start dropping off as I collect. I'm not much into crafting. I an excellent butcher if you need one though

Silver is an annoyance because every craft seems to need it outside of alchemy. If each tree had its own things to go get, that would be both more immersive and allow more communal activity. I've been pretty focused on tailoring, and been doing base carpentry (no mastworking). Now that Drothar's back in, I'll probably see him next time I need a shield or sword. Tialessa, who finally caved and joined the guild, is interested in alchemy/enchantment long term so I'd probably take those items to her unless we have other skilled enchanters. I get more than enough metals for whatever bindings I need in tailoring, so I'm more than fine dropping copper and iron into a communal chest.

As for Mass Appeal development, I understand it. I really do. They need customers to earn cash to keep developing. At the current pace, they just won't make enough to keep all of the staff paid. And if they start having to cut staff, development slows, which reduces how much people give them financially and a huge downward spirals kills it in the end.

I am really concerned about the game's long term prospects. But I am enjoying it for now, and will take advantage of the run while it lasts. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and they'll manage to build a larger player base. I don't see it though.

Ach forgot Life was in that area! Safe Travels!! I am working on enchanting as well, I got a deal on silver and gold ore last week that made it to good to be true. I have found out it seems the skills you can masterwork onto armor or weapons seems to be based on your main skill, I got my first armor with a bonus to glancing blow today at 89.
