ArcheAge Unchained

When the first ArcheAge was released, it was a huge chapter for COTP.  The initial game hype was off the charts, and we had a lot of fun at first... Unfortunately they had some pretty big missteps with the release schedule and some content that was not released as planned (or poorly handled).  A lot of the issues with the game can be attributed to conflicts between the original Korean developer XL Games and the USA publisher Trion Worlds.  Over time the game went F2P and quickly became a Pay2Win game.  Let's just say that the community was unhappy with the direction of the game.
Enter GamIgo Games!  Last year Gamigo Games purchased Trion Worlds and acquired the ownership rights of ArcheAge.  As a direct result of all the community backlash, they decided to release a completely different version of the game.  By popular demand, ArcheAge Unchained is going to be a completely separate game on its own, and they are eliminating the big P2W problems.  ArcheAge Unchained is being released on October 15th, and it will be a Buy 2 Play model.  You pay the initial game cost up front, and after that there will be no subscriptions or "Premium monthly costs".  The only items for sale in the "cash shop" will be 100% cosmetic, and anything game impacting from the original ArcheAge game was removed.  For example, the game was due to come out the last weekend in September, but Gamigo Games decided to delay the game for more PTS testing.  The big change they were working on was to make all cosmetic items Bound on Pickup / Purchase.  They wanted to avoid anyone buying cosmetic items for RL money and then selling them on the in-game marketplace to earn gold.  Many people in the community saw this as being slightly Pay 2 Win, so it was removed from the game!

Here is a good video talking about the upcoming release of ArcheAge Unchained, and some history of the original game:

At this point we don't have any official plans of a COTP Chapter, but we will certainly go that way if we get enough people interested!
If you want more information, here is the full copy / paste of the FAQ from the official ArcheAge Unchained forums:

Fractured MMO

Fractured is an open-world fantasy sandbox MMORPG which blends action combat with fully interactive environments, appealing equally to lovers of competitive and cooperative gameplay. Jump right into the fray from day one. Defeat your enemies with skill and wit, not equipment or level. Gather resources, craft, trade and venture into legendary travels as a solitary hero, or start a settlement with your guild and grow it into the next empire. A true sandbox MMORPG, Fractured lets players pursue the gameplay they enjoy, create the type of character they enjoy, and focus on doing what they enjoy.
Fractured Key Features
Unique And Dynamic Setting – Explore the universe of Fractured, which is spread across three planets – Arboreus, Syndesia, and Tartaros. Travel is an important part of the game experience; unlike many traditional MMORPGS, players must find a way to survive as they traverse the worlds. In addition, eclipses, unique PvE events, have a huge impact on the lives of demons and humans. The state of the universe, and even the position of planets, matters!
Race Is More Than Cosmetic – The race you belong to has an actual impact on game mechanics, from the type of society you live in to the ways you can interact with other players. Choose a human and live in – or at odds with – a feudal society. Be a beastman, and live in harmony with nature. Or, choose a demon, and slake your thirst for blood and revenge!
Crafting That Matters – Finding a broadsword in the corpse of a rat sounds a little unlikely? Forget about old RPG clichés and enter a world where every item is crafted by players. Exploit the uneven distribution of resources to get high profits when trading at faraway markets – but make sure you reach your destination alive!
Get Into The Action – You do not need to grind zombies for 80 hours or reach some level limit before you can join your friends on adventures. In Fractured, you can take part in any content from the first day in the game! The Knowledge system offers power and flexibility, allowing players to develop exactly the character they wish to play.
Action Combat Evolved – Fractured melds the combat style you’ve loved in single-player Action RPGs with a complex sandbox universe. Learn to aim, dodge and master over 400 abilities and 40 unique status effects: only your skills and tactics will lead you to victory! The environment is fully interactive, and can be used to give you an edge in your adventures.

Maestrom
Grim fantasy combined with thunderous naval combat in a vibrant, monster-saturated world! Captain an Orc, Dwarf or Human warship and sail the turbulent Abyssal Ocean with online multiplayer, in free-for-all & team based matches.

Be ruthless! Sink other players ships, take their loot and collect their bounty! Be greedy! Maps are littered with floating treasure chests and ships loaded with gold. Be cunning! As the match progresses hungry sea monsters become more aggressive and encroach the safe waters ships can sail in. Ships sailing in 'Dead Waters' for too long end up as monster chow! Be unsinkable! At the end of a match ships can be upgraded and customized with captains, cannons, armor, mates and more! WARSHIPS WIN WITH WITS
Enemy ships can be rammed, grappled and boarded!
Maneuver a ship through the swelling sea and prepare for ramming! The faster the ship is moving the more devastating the collision will be on impact.

Boarding locks both ships in place while crews fight it out. If one crew manages to kill all of the opposing crew, it can spell disaster & sink a ship quickly, sending it to the depths!

ARMOR, AMMO AND POSITIONAL DAMAGE
Each ship has armor on all four sides. The armor sections serve as additional defense toward damage to that side and must be destroyed before the ship's hull can be damaged. Maneuvering to keep your armor between you and your enemy is vital to staying afloat - and seeking the enemy's damaged sides will make you much more lethal in combat!Every cannon has access to three kinds of ammunition and can swap during combat to suit the situation. Ammo is unlimited.
Iron shot blasts chunks out of ship armor and hull. Chain shot is used to shred enemy sails and cripple a ship’s speed. Grapeshot slaughters enemy crew and makes ships easier to board. LURKING THE DEEP
Like the ocean they reside in, sea monsters are titanic forces of nature. They stalk unwary captains and can devour a ship whole. Like this Murkwater Thrasher.

Somewhat, though I keep holding off because right now I'm mostly interested in PvE content. But I remember people kept saying ArcheAge was one of the best MMOs out there when it came out, just ruined due to the monetization cash grabs.

I think if I had to put my finger on 3 specific things that "ruined" ArcheAge:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The release schedule.  They were gradually releasing content that was already out in the Korean version of the game.  However, the devs did a horrible job of planning it. Guild Castles were advertised as one of the most exciting PvP aspects of the game, but they failed to deliver those at launch.  They waited 2-3 months before finally making them available, and then a combination of two guilds snapped up all 3 of the castles.  Most people had to choose to merge their guilds in to the "PvP Zerg" guilds just to stay competitive.

They also had a major misstep where they released the endgame weapons in raids that only 2-3 guilds were capable of doing.  They then waited weeks or months before they released the equal powered variations of those items that were craftable.  Given that ArcheAge was such a hugely crafter-centric game, this was seen as a major slight to the PvE crafting community, and a lot of the top crafters in the game quit. The economy started to collapse and the players left the game in droves.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Hacking.  Failing to stop hacking was also something that counted against them.  People were using bots to "land grab" when plots of land came up for sale.  You would have 20 people standing around a house that was about to default into an open lot due to non-payment, but someone on the other size of the world would somehow buy the plot seconds before the live players would see it open for sale on their screens.  When the game was first launched this was a really big deal, because the best location for your house was top priority for a lot of people.

There is also a feature in this game called "Trade Packs" where you craft a pack that your character carries on their back, and then you bring it across the map to sell it somewhere else.  This was a very hyped way to make money in the game, as you could net serious gold by doing some of the more profitable trade runs.  Some guilds would even make caravans of players to do a specific trade run.  They would have people carrying packs on player-crafted ships, PvP players guarding those players, and then other PvP players on additional ships to guard the trade ships.  It was a pretty big deal, and it drove a lot of the PvP content in the game.  However, a lot of people were using teleport hacks to simply teleport across the map and turn in their expensive trade packs with no risk at all.  Even if you had a video of the player hacking, it took weeks for Trion to ban anyone.  Even then, some people got away with it repeatedly, and people started to think the devs were playing favorites with certain guilds getting away with it more than anyone else.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. The "Labor" system.  Stupidly, the North America version of the game introduced a labor point system to the game.  Supposedly created to prevent botting, it basically limited what each character was allowed to do each day.  You could only perform so many actions such as farming, crafting, or making trade packs.  There were "labor point" potions that restored X labor points each day, but those were seen as a cash grab tactic since they usually had to be purchased with real money.  Labor Points were shared across your account, so to keep competitive most people had to manage 2-3 accounts.  If you were paying the Premium subscription fee to maximize your labor points, you were paying $30-45 a month for all your accounts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you had thick skin enough to get through all the issues, it was a very very good game.  The combat was fun IMO, the sandbox content was great, and overall the design of the game was attractive to a huge audience.  If they hadn't mismanaged the game so poorly, it may have even reached a top 5 MMORPG's Of All Time list.  Unfortunately, their missteps with releases and hacking led to a mass exodus of players that they never recovered from.

Now, all that being said - I've been watching preview videos all day, and most of the streamers are saying that ArchAge Unchained may fix a lot of the issues with the original game.

This is probably the best one:

I think I'll give it a try! If the guild is participating, any picks on the server?

Next month will be fun for sure. Destiny 2's Shadowkeep on the 1st, Archeage Unchained on the 15th, and then SWTOR's Onslaught on the 22nd.

Are you referring to the crafting itself, or to the labor point system?

The crafting system.

It is stupid insane and nearly impossible to craft uber items.  Currently AA crafting is purely luck and you will lose great sums of gold (thousands) repeatedly until you get lucky.  The crafting system is what drove me to quit the game.  Keep in mind, I haven't followed the game and maybe the crafting got better. The comments below reflect how the crafting system worked when i played it.

After you upgrade an item, you then unseal it which then randomly picks a trait. Typhoon is the only trait that can be further upgraded to the next level.  If you are extremely lucky and rich, you will finally create an unsealed Delphinad item.  Upon unsealing that piece it will randomly pick 1 of 7 traits.  You can sell this on the auction.  However, if you are crafting for yourself, then good luck getting the piece that you want.  Creating a matching set of Delphinad armor is damn near impossible.  However, if you are lucky, you can make an insane amount of gold in the game.

These are the steps needed to produce a Delphina quality item.

  1. 1 in 4  chance to upgrade from Illustrious to Magnificent.
  2. 1 in 4  chance to upgrade from Magnificent to Epherium .
  3. 1 in 7  chance to upgrade from Epherium to Delphina.
  4. 1 in 7  chance to get the piece of Delphina that your character needs.

Illustrious

  • Typhoon (sta, str, agi) this is the only one that can be upgraded to Magnificent
  • Lightning (str, agi)
  • Squall (sta, agi)
  • Desert (sta, str)

Magnificent:

  • Typhoon (sta, str, agi) this is the only one that can be upgraded to Epherium
  • Lightning (str, agi)
  • Squall (sta, agi)
  • Desert (sta, str)

Epherium:

  • Typhoon (sta, str, agi) this is the only one that can be upgraded to Delphinad
  • Lightning (str, agi)
  • Squall (sta, agi)
  • Desert (sta, str)
  • Earth (sta)
  • Flame (str)
  • Gale (agi)

Delphinad

  • Typhoon (sta, str, agi)
  • Lightning (str, agi)
  • Squall (sta, agi)
  • Desert (sta, str)
  • Earth (sta)
  • Flame (str)
  • Gale (agi)

So for that Single Delphinad with average luck you'll have crafted 7 Epheriums, which in turn each took an average 4 Magnificent, which took an average 4 Illustrious. So 4*4*7 = 112.  Afterwards you will have a 1/7 chance of getting the piece that you wanted such as a Lightning Delphinad.

Looking at game.  Crafting is not my main draw to any game.   I can apply at the local factory assembly line if I need a crafting fix. :)

You can get by with doing zero crafting... It's all about what you're into.  Some people kept houses with farms just to make money, and never did any personal crafting of gear.

The main draws to the game is the tri-class system (with over 225+ classes in the game), the PvE dungeons, and then the PvP with Castle Sieges.

Same here.  I think I'm definitely not going to bother with Astellia Online... Looking at that one compared to ArcheAge, and the choice is pretty clear.

I doubt it will be as dramatic as the FFXIV reboot, but this relaunch has promise.  Now I need to find a easy mode class out of the 225+ choices to lesson carpel tunnel aggrivation.  But I'm pretty sure ill give it a try.

Next you will have to ask about faction.  Same as last time or change.  Personally, I feel swapping will give me a new game feel as I level up in lands that are new to me instead of, oh yea I remember this.

Hey all, FYI:

Quote

Character Name Reservation - Notice of Delay

The ArcheAge: Unchained team regrets to announce the delay of the Character Name Reservation process for the European and North American regions. As you know, our dedicated teams have been working around the clock to address outstanding issues on the Public Test Server. We made great progress over the last week and as we prepared to make the Unchained client available for pre-download some critical issues were identified during our Quality Assurance pass.

The build we intended to deliver was still affected by issues related to the “server is busy” error and a crash to desktop issue within the 32-bit client. It was highly likely that we could have resolved the issues in the EU region and still be on target for the 10am UTC release, but the NA region would have missed the PDT deadline even after the time difference is considered. Additionally, the client would not have been pre-downloadable and that’s something we committed to delivering. We want to ensure that players are able to log in and access the game correctly so they can create their character in a more stable and fair manner for everyone participating. Our teams continue to work on the outstanding issues as this message is posted.

New Character Reservation Times:

EUROPEAN REGION: Saturday, October 12th, 2019 at 10:00 AM UTC
NORTH AMERICAN REGION: Saturday, October 12th, 2019 at 10:00 AM PDT

Please know that this decision was made to preserve our approach to delivering Unchained. We acknowledge the various delays we’ve had: some due to establishing an optimal time to release, and others due to technical issues. This is one of the latter and is not related to changes requested by the community.

At this time, there is no change to the official release date on October 15, 2019, allowing a three day period for name reservation. It’s very important for us to offer name reservation on a weekend and given the circumstances, we targeted the next available window. We’re committed to continuing our open, transparent dialogue and will immediately take into consideration any feedback resulting from this delay. Thanks for reading.

-The ArcheAge Team
